"I declare myself Klogg, ruler of the Neverhood!'" - Klogg

Klogg, later known as Kloggmonkey, is the first being created by Hoborg and the main antagonist of The Neverhood and Skullmonkeys.

In The Neverhood[]

Klogg's Birth[]

Klogg was created by Hoborg out of loneliness immediately after building the uninhabited world of the Neverhood. Hoborg retrieved a life seed from inside his crown and planted it, instantly creating a red humanoid which Hoborg named Klogg.

Hoborg greets Klogg with generosity, saying that "Everything you see here is yours." Klogg, immediately becoming interested in Hoborg's crown, trying to snatch it off his head. Hoborg stops Klogg and warns him that his crown is one thing he cannot have, further irritating Klogg. He invites Klogg to explore the Neverhood, and departs for his throne room to more carefully plan the rest of his new friends. Left alone, Klogg begins jealously plotting his revenge against Hoborg.

Klogg Succeeds Hoborg[]

While Hoborg is sitting in his throne room with a life seed in his hand, Klogg climbs onto his chair and steals the crown. Ignoring Hoborg's pleas, Klogg puts the crown on and declares himself the new ruler, leaving Hoborg in a state of suspended animation. The crown corrupts Klogg and transforms him into a demonic version of himself, though he is largely indifferent to this transformation.

Discarding the crown, Willie watches Klogg from the background and spots Hoborg holding the life seed. He takes it away and flees to the nursery, planting it. This leads into the creation of a humanoid named Klaymen. Klogg spends his time skulking within the castle and, at some point, splits the land in half, securing one half by a chain to an island beside his castle.

The Neverhood[]

Klogg is first made aware of Klaymen's presence when he sees him outside his castle's window, preparing to pull the pin on the chain and bring the two halves of the Neverhood back together. Klaymen succeeds with this task while Klogg leaves, spying on Klaymen's progress and plotting traps for him.

When Klaymen revives Bil and rescues Willie from the Purple Weasel, Klogg summons the Clockwork Beast to battle the robot by stealing his teddy bear. The Beast is defeated and sent falling into space, while Bil begins lifting the gate of the castle. However, Klogg is aware of this and uses a remote to control the cannon, firing it at Bill before blowing a hole in his chest. Bil manages to hold the gate open long enough for Klaymen to get inside, before both he and Willie fall off the Neverhood.

With only Klaymen left to deal with, Klogg decides to prevent him from waking Hoborg by offering the crown to Klaymen and corrupting him as well. Klaymen eventually reaches the throne room where Klogg halts him, greeting him pleasantly and introducing him to the Castle. He then offers the throne room and the crown, encouraging Klaymen to decide on claiming the crown for himself.

Bad Ending[]

Bad Ending.

Klaymen wears the crown, himself, and Klogg cackles, declaring himself victorious. Klaymen is then corrupted and greatly resembles Klogg in appearance. He promptly punches Klogg in the face, knocking him out. Klaymen declares himself the new ruler and cackles over Klogg's body.

Good Ending[]

Klaymen spots Hoborg and Klogg immediately takes away the crown, aware of his intentions. Klaymen pulls down Klogg's loincloth to distract him and takes the crown, but is impeded when Klogg pulls a lever that surrounds Hoborg's throne with spikes. Klaymen uses a rope to get to Hoborg anyways, and despite Klogg's warnings, Klaymen places the crown on Hoborg's head. While Hoborg congratulates Klaymen for his efforts, Klogg draws a knife and prepares to stab Hoborg in the back. But, as Klogg approaches them, he accidentally steps on the cannon's remote and fires a cannon ball at himself, sending him flying through a wall before falling off of the Neverhood.

In Skullmonkeys[]

Klogg falls through space and eventually lands on the planet Idznak, where he accidentally kills one of the Skullmonkeys by landing on him. He takes the Skullmonkey's fur and skull, wearing it as a disguise, soon becoming the Skullmonkeys' new king. Calling himself "Kloggmonkey", he convinces the Skullmonkeys to build his Evil Engine No. 9 to destroy the Neverhood. An intelligent skullmonkey named Jerry-O sees through this plan before sending a flying machine to the Neverhood, where it retrieves Klaymen and brings him to Idznak.

Klogg and his Skullmonkeys finish the machine, preparing it for launch, but Klaymen arrives to stop Klogg. After a battle with Klogg in his own personal vehicle, Klayman destroys it, resulting in an explosion that kills Klogg instantly.

At the end of the game, several skullmonkeys sing the song "Klogg is Dead" and celebrate Klogg's death.

Trivia[]

  • Klogg's role as the antagonist has major similarities to Satan from the biblical story Paradise Lost, as both are entities created by powerful figures who they would later turn against for personal desires.
    • Though Satan in Paradise Lost is largely more sympathetic than Klogg is in The Neverhood, Klogg expresses no regret or restraint in his actions and self-reflection on his nature as a villain.
  • Normally, Willie will send messages with hints to the mail room, for Klaymen to read. However, after he and Bil fall off the Neverhood, Klogg will be sending messages instead. Unlike Willie, Klogg does not give any hints at all.
